Effigy pipe
Clay pipe, 19th century.
This pipe was found in a rubbish pit, at the site of the Wood, Shands and Co. bonded store. It was most likely deposited between the mid-1870s and late 1880s.
Effigy style pipes like this were popular during the latter half of the 19th century. The caricature of the African or African American face was a welcome distraction from the near 4000 fragments of glass bottles, metal and other material excavated from this feature.
