The Glass-eyed Pipe

The glass-eyed skull

19th century.

This skull is not only fun and frightening to look at;

it also once formed the bowl of a clay tobacco

smoking pipe. Note the blue glass eyes.

This pipe is similar in style to late 19th century pipes that were manufactured in France. It was

recovered near the remains of a 19th century foundry in Christchurch.

Many elaborately decorated 19th century clay smoking pipes have been recovered from

Christchurch, but this “Indiana Jones, Crystal  Skull” is the creepiest artefact that I have ever found.
