I've been mesmerised by Greek and Roman history, mythology and culture for as long as I can remember, and I always dreamed of the ultimate career as some sort of classics nerd. While I still probably consider myself to be a closet classics nerd - the reason I've stayed in archaeology is not because of classics. Working in New Zealand historical archaeology, I employ a lot of the same research techniques and skills that I learned and loved during my classical archaeology training. The most fundamental of these is the combination and comparative analysis of historical records with physical archaeological evidence. Having spent the past three years often browsing 19th and 20th century New Zealand newspapers, I've come to realise that the history of our own Victorian ancestors is just as colourful, compelling and scandalous as anything one might find in Suetonius's The Twelve Caesars. I've been seduced by New Zealand history, and there is something pretty special about researching links to one's own heritage and culture. I love history, I love to learn, and in my job - I get to learn new things every day!
