Jesus, Mary, and Joesph!

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!

Ceramic figurines, Christchurch, 19th-20th Century

These two figurines were a part of a 19th and 20th century assemblage from a residential site.

The figure on the right depicts Mary and baby Jesus on a donkey. As they are manufactured in the same style, it is possible that these two figurines were originally part of the same nativity set.

Although little can be discovered about their origins, the figurines are notable artefacts as very few religious artefacts have been recovered from archaeological sites in Christchurch.
