Cheese Wiz!

Cheese Wiz anyone?

Maclaren’s Imperial Cheese, 1892-1904

This cheese jar was found at a site in central Christchurch. It was made by Canadian manufacturer Alexander Maclaren.

Maclaren’s cheese was advertised as “one of the most appetising luxuries the world produces”. Not precisely the truth as this cheese had a shelf life of 5 years, not dissimilar to products such as Cheese Wiz.

This jar is an example of a shift in diet. Over the 20th century, New Zealanders increasingly consumed processed foods over raw, whole foods, leading to a number of health problems.
